Railway Rules & Guidelines

Rails Are for Everyone

The railway system is a shared resource meant to benefit the entire server. Any rail line connected to the main network must follow these rules to keep things safe, functional, and fair for all players.

Track Rules

Right-Hand Traffic: All trains should travel on the right side of the track on the main lines if running parallel.

Dual Tracks: Main rail lines must always have two tracks — one for each direction — to avoid crashes and keep traffic flowing unless terrain makes this difficult. If a main rail line has to go down to one track due to terrain, keep that section as short as possible and have signals in place to avoid crashes.

Standard Spacing: Dual tracks should have at least 3 blocks of space between them so that trains may pass one another without intersecting.

Intersections: All intersections must be controlled by train signals on the main lines to keep trains moving safely.

Main Line Priority: Main railway lines take priority over other lines that come off of them. Your bases are amazing but do not take priority over public spaces.

Railroad Workers’ Guild

If a rail is found to be in violation of these standards, the Railroad Workers’ Guild reserves the right to step in and fix or adjust it as needed to maintain the integrity of the network. We'll always do our best to respect your builds while keeping the rails running smoothly!

Stations, Tunnels, & Train Design

Train Parking: Trains should never be left on the main tracks. Stations must include at minimum one 40-block-long stopping lane (like the one near spawn), plus a place to park your own trains. Busy towns will need extra lanes for visitor parking.

Platforms: All platforms should be 0, 1, or 2 blocks above track level with a one block space between the rail and the platform for an easy boarding experience. Use spawn train station as an example if needed.

Station Signage: Make sure each station has a clear sign showing the station name and any services available.

Train Size Limits: Individual train carriages must be no longer than 32 blocks and no wider than 5 blocks to fit into standard station lanes. You can have multiple carriages but please no more than a total of 128 blocks in length of all carriages together. This will ensure stopped trains at stations won't block the main line.

Tunnel Clearance: Tunnels need to be at least 8 blocks tall and 7 blocks wide in order to fit standard trains. No solid blocks or liquids should obstruct the tunnel. This also applies to bridges over major rivers and oceans.

Lighting: Keep tunnels and stations well-lit!

Safety Rules

Signal Spacing: Place train signals every 128 blocks on main lines to manage traffic safely.

Rail Crossings: All crossings should have gates or signals to protect pedestrians.

Curve Safety: The straighter the lines, the faster trains can go. Sharp turns should include speed reduction signs or stations to have a smoother ride.

Let’s work together to build a rail system that’s safe, efficient, and fun to use for everyone!
